I am super passionate about vocal health and am on a mission to make a lot of noise about it, particularly within the musical theatre industry, which is one of the most athletic, challenging and formidable industries that professional vocalists will ever work in.
In 2012 I found myself in the loneliest place, when, after a challenging run, in an 8 show week production, I was finally forced to face the red flags that my voice had been waving in my face for several months and go get an ENT scope. It revealed that I had soft nodules on one fold, and pre-nodular swelling on the other.
I was devastated and had no idea how to cope or what to do next.
Thank goodness I was fortunate enough to be around the right colleagues on the right day, who recommended the right name to me in passing, and I was able to quickly be put on the path to recovery. It was expensive and took a long time. For over a year I worked with ENT doctors, speech therapists, vocal coaches (only when I could afford it) and crawled my way back through a lengthy, self made, rehab programme - which at the time was my Rock Bottom, but in hindsight.... was one of the most valuable experiences I ever had.
Since then, I become fascinated by all things to do with the voice and vocal health.
It shocked me how, despite having a strong classical foundation, and how much contemporary technique I thought I had, that I had ended up in that position. The more I have worked in this area, the more I have realised that a VOCAL INJURY IS PRETTY MUCH INEVITABLE for singers who have a high vocal load and use their voice at the level that professional performers do.
The mental repercussions and the shame I felt, was also something I had to deal with alone, as there is so much judgment and stigma around the topic od "losing your voice" - which is why so many people suffer silently and bury their heads in the sand. I am also on a mission to change that perception.
Over my 20 years of working, it has become more and more clear to me, that regardless of talent, or technique, or experience ...almost ALL vocalists, will suffer a vocal injury at some point in thier career, if they are singing long enough. It is a matter of time.
Over the past 5 years, I have found myself working with more and more West End vocalists, colleagues and professionals who have trusted me with their voices. Many have originally come to me for a lesson, only to reveal that actually they are in "A VOCAL CRISIS".
I have found myself helping many professionals bring their voices back from the brink, building rehab exercise programmes, explaining anatomy, vocal issues, recovery techniques and curating a team of professionals (trusted ENT doctors, laryngologists, speech therapist, osteopaths and physiotherapists) to work alongside me, to create a support network for my students - who understand what vocalists need to fully recover.
I decided to try and formalise this training, and acquired a certificate in VOCAL HEALTH, with Vocal Health Education UK, and then proceeded to qualify as a VOCAL FIRST AIDER, and am currently studying for my qualification as a VOCAL REHABILITATION SPECIALIST.
The good news is - there are few voice disorders or injuries that you can't come back from - they can be healed, or greatly improved with the right help.
If you are recovering from an injury, or feel like you are on the cusp of one, or even if you are trying to sing through tension and know you need a reset.... please get in touch for a session.
In the meantime, watch his space where I plan to upload resources, and further info on how to maintain your vocal health,
